Undergraduate Supplemental Funding Program
The Stanford Archaeology Center offers supplemental funding to support undergraduate archaeology majors and minors in their professional and research development. Applicants are encouraged to apply to alternate funding sources in addition to the undergraduate supplemental funding program.
Types of Funding:
- Undergraduate Conference Award
- Undergraduate Research Award
- Undergraduate Research Assistantship
- Archaeology Conference Support and/or Summer Research Support Funding for Female Aligning Students
A committee evaluates applications and makes decisions one to three weeks after the deadline. Each award will range in value and the amount may differ from what is requested. Additionally, by applying, you authorize departmental staff to examine your academic transcript and consult with faculty and staff regarding you.
Undergraduate Conference Award
The Undergraduate Conference Award is meant to aid in the academic and professional development of undergraduate students by supporting their participation in a domestic conference as an attendee or presenter. Funds can be applied to flights, hotels, per diem for food, and conference registration. Funds can be provided in different modalities (reimbursement, stipend, p-card purchase, etc.) depending on what is being requested.
Will fund up to $1,500.
Eligibility
- Students must be a declared archaeology major or minor.
- Students must be in good academic standing at Stanford.
Application Deadlines
- Due to the various conference registration timelines, the Stanford Archaeology Center has four application deadlines spread throughout the year to support student attendance at conferences. If awarded the funding it usually will become available the following Quarter. For example, May 1 awards will be funded at the beginning of Summer quarter, July 1 awardes will be available at the beginning of Fall quarter. - A brief itinerary of what your time at the conference will look like (PDF Upload).
- Is this your first time attending a conference (Check Box).
- A list of any sources of alternative funding you may have acquired (PDF Upload).
- A detailed budget of requested funds for this conference and what the funds will be used towards (PDF Upload).
- An essay to explain in 300-600 words why this conference will support your academic journey (Text Box).
- If presenting, provide a letter of support from a faculty mentor (PDF Upload).
- If the faculty advisor prefers to submit their letter separately to the Archaeology Administrative Director, please provide them with the link to submit their recommendation. We will attach the letter during the review process.

Undergraduate Research Award
The Undergraduate Research Award is meant to aid in the research and professional development of undergraduate students by supporting their research interests. Research can happen domestically or internationally. Funds can be applied to flights, hotels, and per diem for food, and equipment. Funds will be provided in different modalities (reimbursement, stipend, p-card purchase, etc.) depending on what is being requested and depending on the quarter your research will be conducted during. Stipends can be provided mostly during the Summer.
Will fund up to $4,000.
Eligibility
- Students must be a declared archaeology major or minor.
- Students must be in good academic standing at Stanford.
Application Deadline

If awarded the funding it usually will become available the following Quarter. For example, May 1 awards will be funded at the beginning of Summer quarter, July 1 awardes will be available at the beginning of Fall quarter. Undergraduate Research Internship
Every year Stanford faculty host paid Undergraduate Research Internship opportunities. The Internship provides an opportunity for undergraduates to work closely with a faculty mentor on different aspects of their research during a quarter.
Students will be paid hourly for up to 15 hours per week for up to 10 weeks in a given quarter. The available hours is dependent on how many hours the faculty mentor designates for this opportunity.
Eligibility
- Students must be in good academic standing at Stanford.
- Students must be enrolled at Stanford.
- Students may not receive both academic units and a payment for any single project activity.
- Co-term students who have not conferred their undergraduate degree and are still paying undergraduate, not graduate, tuition are eligible.
- Students may not be serving a suspension.
- Students may not be on a Leave of Absence (LOA).
- Students will be hired on an hourly basis through the Archaeology Center and Stanford University Human Resources Department and will need to provide I-9 information to the HR Department.

Archaeology Conference Support and/or Summer Research Support Funding
Supplemental field research funding for graduate or undergraduate students. This funding helps provide supplemental funding for summer archaeology research expenses that are not covered through department funding, internal sources, or external sources of funding. Retroactive reimbursement of already expended funds and conference costs are not eligible.
Eligibility
- All Stanford archaeology graduate or undergraduate students who conduct archaeological research.
- Students must be in good academic standing at Stanford.
- The award amount is based on demonstrated need.
