Sarah Wilker

Sarah is a PhD student in Classics (Classical Archaeology track). Her current research focuses on the relationship between material culture and connectivity, particularly how archaeological ceramic data can be used to study social, technological, and economic change and development in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. These specific research interests are part of a wider focus on how literary and archaeological evidence can be used to study the ancient economy.

Sarah graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Classical Civilizations (2015), and received an MPhil in Classical Archaeology from Oxford University (2017). Her Master’s thesis explored the efficacy of comparing ceramic assemblages across sites and argued for an increased focus on ceramic proxy data in the study of the ancient economy. She has participated in archaeological projects in Italy, Turkey, and Greece. Most recently she has worked as a ceramicist on The Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project and the Burgaz Harbors Project.
