New Research on Ancient Mobility and Connectivity

Movement and interaction were at the heart of social, economic, political, and religious developments across and beyond the shores of the premodern Mediterranean. Connectivity and mobility are therefore key vantage points from which to explore the dynamics and developments of past communities. Some movements are well documented by material or historical evidence, yet others—e.g., flows of ideas, know-how, and capital—can escape detection through such sources. The relationships, moreover, between the diverse range of interactions and variable mobilities of people and the material and historical traces through which we tend to evaluate them are hardly straightforward, demanding innovative theoretical and analytical approaches.

This workshop aims to bring together local researchers whose interests and approaches center on issues of ancient movement and interaction, and whose work foregrounds connectivity and mobility in the historical and material record of the Mediterranean world, broadly construed to include adjacent regions in antiquity as well as the echoes and reception of such dynamics into more recent eras. The program includes graduate student, early career, and professional academic researchers from the Bay Area (again broadly construed) for a day-long workshop on April 30, offering an opportunity to present, discuss, and gain feedback on early-stage and work in progress and to build new connections with scholars sharing interests across the bay.

The workshop is sponsored by Stanford’s Department of Classics and Archaeology Center and the Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology at UC Berkeley, and organized by Paulina Komar (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford, p.komar [at] uksw.edu.pl (p[dot]komar[at]uksw[dot]edu[dot]pl)), Justin Leidwanger (Stanford, jleidwa [at] stanford.edu (jleidwa[at]stanford[dot]edu)), and Carlos Noreña (UC Berkeley, norena [at] berkeley.edu (norena[at]berkeley[dot]edu))
