The Disabled Archaeologists

Abstract:  Archaeologists and the general public alike tend to assume that archaeologists are nondisabled, but in fact there are increasing numbers of disabled archaeologists, some of us hiding in plain sight and others navigating archaeology careers with obviously apparent disabilities. Some of us have disabilities that predate our involvement with archaeology, while others become disabled during their careers, or even because of injuries sustained on the job. In this talk, I will use theories from disability studies and stories from my qualitative interview study of systemic oppression in archaeology to explore the workings of ableism in the discipline and the skills and resilience of disabled students and professionals. This work is drawn from my recent publication in the International Journal of Historical Archaeology and my forthcoming book. I will also share the story of the creation of the Disabled Archaeologists Network.
